SEGi College Sarawak Signs MOU with SeDidik SEDC
KUCHING: Once again SEGi College Sarawak is taking another step to elevate Early Childhood Education by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SeDidik.
SeDidik is a wholly owned subsidiary company of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC). They have been in the industry since 1990 and are the experts in the field of Early Childhood Education in Sarawak.
This collaboration will compliment SEGi College Sarawak’s Early Childhood Education programme and will give additional benefit to the students.
Therefore, the MOU Signing between these 2 institutions will be held on 25th October 2013 (Friday) at the Grand Margherita Hotel, Kuching to explore opportunities to strengthen cooperation and increase internship programmes between these 2 institutions.
The signing Ceremony will be officiated by Yang Berhormat Datuk Haji Talib Zulpilip, the Chairman of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and Assistant Minister of Tourism Sarawak. KUCHING: SEGi College Sarawak students who achieved 4.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) in their examination results were presented with the Principal Award in a ceremony held recently. The Principal Award is an award which is given only to high achievers currently studying in SEGi College Sarawak.

KUCHING: Ms. Allister Kuek Mong Yee and Mr. Lim Chiaw
Soon from the American Degree Program (ADP) of SEGi College Sarawak were recently awarded for their achievement
in academics and received the Dean’s List award from Upper Iowa University,
United States of America.
“I am very
proud that I am able to get into the Dean’s List. Honestly, it is not an easy
task to get into the Dean’s List as the requirement from UIU is high”, said Lim
after receiving this award.
Apart from their academic achievements, Kuek
and Lim are active in their respective clubs and societies where they were
appointed as Club President. Kuek was Vice President of the Student Council of
SEGi College Sarawak.
“Studying in
ADP is quite challenging, but this motivates me to put more effort so that I
can be an achiever. Although ADP is a challenging program, it still did not
deter me to join other activities such as the Basketball Club and Bible Study Club.
In my opinion, being exposed to various activities and also reading stimulated
my mind and helped me to gain more knowledge”, said Lim.
When asked about how they are able to cope
with both studies and other activities, Allister said that time management and
self discipline are equally important to maintain balance between the two.
“A planner is the best tool, to keep
everything listed and help me keep my activities within a time frame. When I
play, I play hard; when I study, I study smart. ‘Nothing is impossible’ is my
motto in life”, added Kuek.
“ADP is flexible and encourages students to
participate in class activities, therefore it teaches students to be critical
thinkers and to share their opinions. Plus, I can study this program locally
without going to the States and graduate within 4 and a half years”, said Kuek
when asked about her education path.
“In ADP, I
have learnt how to think critically, learn to be independent and at the same
time learn how to work together with people. After I graduate from ADP, I will
still further my studies in both of my majors. Learning never ends”, said Lim
“To my juniors,
learn as much as you can in ADP, and you will find that it helps a lot in your
career. And that is the reason I choose ADP, as it exposes us to various fields
and we can apply what we learnt”, added Lim.
Kuek and Lim are now working and will be attending
their graduation ceremony in October 2013.
Talk On Becoming a Barrister in the UK talk session by AAS @ SEGi College Sarawak
KUCHING: The Kuching Branch of the Advocate’s Association of Sarawak (AAS) will be holding a talk session at SEGi College Sarawak on Wednesday, 28th August 2013 at 2pm on the topic of becoming a barrister in the UK and some insights into the study of law there.
A panel of distinguished speakers will take to the stage to talk about this topic and answer questions from the audience. They are, Mr Patrick Maddams, Tan Sri James Foong and Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong bin Matjeraie.
Mr Patrick Maddams is currently the Sub-Treasurer of the Inner Temple, UK and is responsible for the day to day management of the Inner Temple. In England and Wales, the Inns of Court are unincorporated associations that date back to the 14th Century and play the important role of recruiting and training aspiring barristers. Together with the Bar Council and Bar Standards Board, the Inns of Court also perform supervisory and disciplinary functions over student members and hold the exclusive rights to call candidates to practise as barristers at the Bar of England and Wales.
Mr Maddams is placed in the best position to talk about entry requirements to the Inner Temple and will explain the process of training to become a barrister in the UK.
Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong bin Matjeraie is a retired Federal Court judge, the apex Court of Malaysia and has more than 30 years of legal and judicial experience. He was also appointed by the Prime Minister as one of the four eminent persons to serve on the Judicial Appointments Commission since February 2013.
Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie served as a member of the Malaysian Judiciary for 15 years, commencing with this time as a High Court judge from 1988 to 2007; a Judge of the Court of Appeal Malaysia from 2007 to 2012 and a Federal Court Judge from 2012 until his retirement in January this year. He will share his insights into the lives of judges and the role of the judiciary in general in the administration of justice.
Tan Sri James Foong is also a retired Judge of the Federal Court of Malaysia having served in the Judiciary in the capacity as a High Court Judge from 1990 to 2005; as a Judge of the Court of Appeal Malaysia from 2005 – 2009 and a Federal Court Judge from 2005 until his retirement in 2012. During his time on the Bench, Tan Sri James Foong was also the presiding judge in the Bakun Dam and Highland Towers cases both of which received widespread attention from the media and legal commentators nationally and abroad. Tan Sri James Foong was also the Chairman of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the death of Teoh Beng Hock.
Tan Sri James Foong will talk about admissions to the University of West England in Bristol, UK and discuss with students their lives as international students abroad.
Having these distinguished speakers with high knowledge and vast experience in both the legal and judicial fields presents a rare and special opportunity for students and those interested to pursue a career in law to meet, hear and ask questions on the study of law in the UK as an international student.
As an added advantage to their Law students, SEGi College Sarawak ensures their programmes deliver mostly UK syllabus as a precursor to the degree programme.
This talk session is also open to the public, especially those who are considering law as their future career path.
This is the third event jointly organised with the AAS, the previous being a talk in 2012 on entry requirements to the Sarawak Bar and more recently in March this year on the Federal Constitution of Malaysia as part of the AAS’ MyConstitution campaign to educate citizens on their rights and freedoms.

Learn through theory and practical experience
KUCHING: Early Childhood Education (ECE) students from SEGi College Sarawak take part in regular trips to pre-schools to gain more practical knowledge and experience with children.
In understanding that children learn most effectively through play and interaction, SEGi ensures their ECE students gain maximum exposure and learn through practical experience with children.
SEGi College Sarawak takes great satisfaction in offering the Diploma in Early Childhood Education programme to those who are interested in and passionate about this field. This diploma is open to SPM graduates as well as those ECE professionals who already have industrial experience but wish to enhance their knowledge and skills.
"As a component of the final year, students are required to undertake industrial hands-on training in an early education setting. Brendan and Claudia listed in UIU Dean’s List
Both students are currently studying the American Degree Program at SEGi College Sarawak. Brendan majors in Psychology and Communication while Claudia majors in Psychology and Marketing.
Apart from their academic achievements, they are also the well known leaders of the student council, both of them having served in the same batch as president and vice president back in 2011.
When asked about how they keep the balance between academic and club activities, Claudia answer that attending class is important and she will make sure to concentrate fully during class. To be able to know the priority is the best to balance both study and other activities.
“I always have this motto in my life which is to work hard and play hard. At the same time, I always use organizer to plan my schedule”, said Brendan.
“ADP is different from other programs whereby students are encouraged to be more outspoken and engage in many class activities”, said Claudia when asked about the program.
While Brendan thinks the ADP is most exciting and interesting.
In the future, Brendan would like to join an established Public Relation Company while Claudia plans to further her education to Master Degree level.
SEGi College Sarawak offers Upper Iowa University’s Bachelor of Science (4+0) program. This program enables SPM students to apply for direct entry without having to complete a foundation or A-level programme as there is a foundation year incorporated into the 4 years of study.
Students can choose from either single or double majors in the fields of Communication, Finance, Management, Marketing and Psychology. Certain double majors can even be completed without adding any additional fees or duration.

KUCHING – SEGi College Sarawak’s A-Levels Team finished as Runners-Up in the Bond University High School Mooting Competition held from the 24th-25th of April. The team, comprising Ezra Voon, Rene Yap and Jeffrey Foo, have never mooted before but spent weeks engrossed in extensive research, drafting and practice for their delivery. Notably, this was the first time SEGi College Sarawak has ever participated in the competition, which featured teams of students up to Year 12 or A-Levels from numerous public and private schools within the State.
Having mooted on the first day of the competition, they were announced as one of the final two teams who would stand a chance to win the Grand Prize of a partial scholarship to pursue a Degree in Law at Bond University. Their opponents, SM Lodge (Team 1) eventually triumphed in what was admitted to be arguably the most tightly-contested final ever.
“This was a very tough decision; both teams were so close in the Final Moot,” said Ms. Kathy Atkins, the judge and a Clinical Associate Professor from the University’s renowned Faculty of Law. “Considering this is the first time SEGi College is participating in this competition, to come second is a highly commendable achievement. We certainly look forward to seeing more of what the college has to offer in the years to come.”
Ezra Voon, who acted as Senior Counsel for the team, states “This has been a fantastic learning process for us. We thank the organisers for this opportunity to hone and display our skills as budding advocates/solicitors. Most of all, we would like to show our appreciation to our friends, family and supporters, particularly our trainer Ms. Suhana Razali, who worked with us intensively, and our senior Derrick Moh, for keeping us motivated under pressure.”

Mr. Derrick Moh, one of the proud recipients of The Principal Award generously shared his study tips. The first thing he mentioned is hard work.
“Time management is important and I always plan my study routine, especially the 1 or 2 months leading up to exams. I will also make sure not to over-study”, said Derrick.
“Students should have a positive mindset towards examinations because if you approach them as obstacles you will be instantly discouraged. Student should think of examinations as a self development check point”, added Derrick.
SEGi College Sarawak is also giving Scholarships to high achieving SPM 2012 students, as well as financial assistance in terms of study loans to eligible applicants.

“Time management is important and I always plan my study routine, especially the 1 or 2 months leading up to exams. I will also make sure not to over-study”, said Derrick.
“Students should have a positive mindset towards examinations because if you approach them as obstacles you will be instantly discouraged. Student should think of examinations as a self development check point”, added Derrick.

Building Practical Skill with JPK programme
KUCHING: The Department of Skill Development (JPK) is helping to provide opportunities to students who are interested in skill based training. This is an ideal opportunity for those students who have completed their PMR.
The entry criteria for this programme are a minimum of 16 years old and a PMR qualification. Upon completion, the Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SPM) will be awarded. Holders of this certificate will then have another pathway to further their education at a higher level.

‘For the Kids’ Charity Concert to help the Community
KUCHING: ‘For the Kids’ charity concert is organized by SEGi College Sarawak students as a component of the module Marketing Principles under the American Degree Program.
When interviewed, the project leader, Ms. Ng Kher Ching, shared that she and her follow classmates are organizing this charity concert as part of their assignments as well as the obvious need to give back to society.
‘For the Kids’ Charity Concert will be held on the 20th April 2013 at the Ecumenical Center from 7pm to 10pm. Tickets are priced at RM20 each.
When asked about the American Degree Program, Kher Ching, who is a 3rd year student majoring in Psychology and Finance, she said that the program is really suited to her as she is an outgoing person and likes to communicate with others.
The style of education taught follows the American approach and focuses heavily on practical elements of learning with an emphasis on classroom interaction between the students and lecturers. Throughout their studies, students are involved in group projects, presentations and field trips.
The American Degree Program enables SPM students to apply for direct entry without having to complete a foundation or A-level programme as there is a foundation year incorporated into the 4 years of study.
With their Upper Iowa University collaboration, SEGi College Sarawak offers the Bachelor of Science (4+0) American Degree Program (ADP).
This program provides both single and double majors in the fields of Communication, Finance, Management, Marketing and Psychology. Certain double majors can even be completed without adding any additional fees or duration.

Producing more qualified teachers for Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE)
Our country is in dire need of more qualified teachers in the field of early childhood care & education. So much so that it is now a project as part of the Government Entry Point Project (EPP) category under the 10th Malaysian Plan.
The aim of this project is to ensure that quality education starts from a young age, even as early as 3 to 6 years old. According to EPP, by 2015, teachers in Kindergarten are encouraged to have a minimum qualification of Diploma in ECCE.
This is to ensure that quality education that is given to the children starting from 3 to 6 years old with the aim of leading them toward better adoption of higher learning.
SEGi Education Group was appointed by the Government to champion this project in producing more professionals in this area through the Diploma in Early Childhood Education. This diploma is available in Sarawak Campus (SCSwk) for Sarawakians who want to further study in this area right after SPM.
“Early Childhood Education in SEGi Sarawak Campus is open for both fulltime and part time study mode. Facilities such as Mock Play Room are provided to enhance the teaching method to both theory and practical,” said Madam Elina Tiu, the Principal of SCSwk.
Kindergarten teachers who have yet to obtain a diploma qualification are encouraged to further their study in Diploma in Early Childhood Education (DECE) for fulfilling the government EPP so that by 2015, they will be qualified to teach in kindergarten.
DECE at SCSwk is endorsed by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and Malaysia Qualification Agency (MQA).
Scholarships are available for students who have achieved excellent results in SPM and financial assistance by way of study loans is also available to both full time and part time students.
DECE is now open for registration at SCSwk for the April Intake.
A rebate of RM500 will be given to those students who register into a SEGi College Sarawak programme on Open Day 30th and 31st March 2013 at SEGi College Sarawak Main Campus, Branch Campus, Sibu Recruitment Centre, Sabah Admission Center and any of the roadshow venues available on selected dates.

This campaign is organized by SCSwk students as part of their class assignment for the Learning from Practice and Reflection module under the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Business and Management, University of Sunderland, UK.
SCSwk Faculty of Nursing and Allied Health is also taking this opportunity to send their Nursing students to participate in the campaign as part of their practical learning exposure.
“Through this campaign we hope to build support and strengthen the idea that it is important to donate blood and save lives. From this activity, we want our students to develop a social responsibility and awareness toward the community around them,” said Madam Elina Tiu, the Principal of SCSwk.

“Given this responsibility, I will do my best to serve the college together with my team and be the voice of the students,” said Mr. Christenson
For a start, the council assisted in organising the event titled MyConstitution Workshop with Advocates Association of Sarawak (AAS), which was championed by SEGi Law Society (SLS). The event turned out to be very successful with almost a hundred SLS members participating.
“At the same time, I will take this opportunity to improve my leadership and management skills which will be useful in assisting towards my future career advancement”, added Christenson.
The new council team consists of Mr. Christensen (President), Ms. Noratikah Binti Hasli (Vice President), Ms. Hazel Lim Ik Mei (Treasurer), Ms. Wee Wee Binti Buyong (Vice Treasurer), Ms. Seraphine Shantee (Secretary), Ms. Tunrah Binti Mohd Riduan (Vice Secretary) and Committee members, Ms. Elisa Bong Sie Kim, Ms. Alexandria Kucha, Ms. Angela Demai anak Mula and Mr. Yek Yik Fatt.
“With the new team, I believed SEGi will have another prosperous year where the entire student body can create more fond memories. By helping to organise and participating in more activities, students will develop and improve upon interpersonal skills as well as management skills, which will be a great asset upon graduation and will help towards their career,” said Madam Elina Tiu, the Principal of SCSwk.

SEGi Sarawak makes a new wish on RED OPEN DAY
22 Feb 2013, KUCHING: SEGi College Sarawak (SCSwk) makes a new wish during Chinese New Year celebration on RED Open Day.
SCSwk believes that having a quality education as well as recognition by the Malaysian government is very important for anyone who pursues education and career thereafter.
“We are always dedicated to provide quality education and on this New Year, together, we will give extra efforts in order to provide the best education to our students”, said Madam Elina Tiu, Principal of SCSwk.
Quality education is not just about providing good theoretical materials, but it is also to provide good facilities to enhance theoretical principles into practical skills and knowledge.
SCSwk has facilities ready for students who wish to pursue education such as a Simulation Ward for the Nursing programme, a Science Laboratory for the Medical Laboratory Technology programme, an Art Studio for the Design and Creative Arts programme and many more.
Law programmes are also available in SCSwk, plus with the availability of a Moot Court to compliment practical classes, law students are equipped with hands-on experience before they even graduate.
SCSwk encourages students to apply their theoretical knowledge and practical skills into practice. Therefore, most of SCSwk programmes are adopting an internship programme as a component of the syllabus. Students will have better experience in both class sessions and the workplace.
