“It is important for them to answer the questions – do I need to just get a job, or do I need to continue my education to get a better job and start building a long-term, successful career?” said the Vice Principal of SEGi College Sarawak, Madam Elina Tiu.
She also emphasizes that students need to keep an open mind and hold off on specializing until they have truly explored their limitations and talents: “Self-assessment can be tricky for anyone, but with a little work, you can arrive at a realistic yet motivating understanding of your skills. SEGi College Sarawak is giving SPM students the opportunity to elevate their academic qualifications to diploma or degree when they register for their programmes with only RM500.
This gives many students the chance to afford degree and diploma programmes that they previously could not afford as this offer is backed by a government loan.
“And because students have the option to complete their entire degree or diploma programme in Kuching, they can save thousands of Ringgit especially when doing a UK Honours Degree or an American Bachelor of Science Degree.”
SPM students can also save time by entering the foundation programme, linking them directly to a degree programme, instead of opting for STPM, which takes 2 years to complete.
This golden opportunity will enable the students to complete their UK Honours degree up to one year ahead of their peers.
Another partner university of SEGi, Upper Iowa University in the USA, allows direct entry from the SPM level into the foundation year of the 4-year bachelor degree.
“SEGi has structured its programmes as well as linked itself with many reputable foreign universities in UK, USA and Australia to give its students maximum career options without the financial worries,” said Tiu.
In addition, choosing the option of studying in Kuching will shave off additional expenditures like accommodation and living expenses overseas, not to mention the higher currency exchange rates.
Since the degree is issued by internationally recognised universities, there is no difference in the degree certification that graduates are getting here compared to those studying on-campus overseas.

KUCHING – “Critical thinking skills give students the ability to understand what they have read or been shown while also building upon that knowledge without incremental guidance, as it stands on the notion that knowledge is fluid and builds upon itself and not simply rote memorization or the ability to absorb lessons unquestioningly,” said SEGi College Sarawak’s Vice Principal, Mdm. Elina Tiu when interviewed after the meeting with the representative from Upper Iowa University – Malaysian Office, recently.
Harbouring this idea, SEGi College Sarawak through its American Degree Program beliefs that, critical thinking courses encourage students to think for themselves - to question hypotheses, to develop alternative hypotheses, and to test those hypotheses against known facts.
“None of this is to say that memorizing facts is necessarily bad, it means only that if rote memorization takes precedence over problem solving, logic, and reason, the students will suffer in the later years.”
The American Degree Program at SEGi is gaining momentum in popularity among Malaysian students due to its unique liberal teaching methods that place critical thinking as one of its main focuses.
The American-styled education system focuses on assessing students throughout each semester through pop-quizzes, presentations, assignments and class participation rather than just on the final examinations alone.
“This creates well rounded critical thinkers who tend to be more vocal, creative and confident as compared with students who study under the conventional education system,” added Tiu.
“Critical thinking should not be confused with being argumentative or being critical of other people, although it can be used in exposing fallacies and bad reasoning, critical thinking can also play an important role in cooperative reasoning and constructive tasks.”
The four-year Bachelor of Science degree programme will expose students to some of the most up-to-date developments in the world because United States is the leader in several areas of research and technology.
The degree is awarded by Upper Iowa University (UIU) and students can complete their American degree in Kuching at a fraction of the cost of studying in the US.
However, if the students have the budget, the program gives them the flexibility of interchanging between SEGi and UIU’s Fayette Campus in the United States.
This means that they can choose to study a term, a semester, a year or even complete their entire degree at the American campus if they so choose as the university allows for flexible credit transfer.

Naturally the cost will escalate as students need to take into consideration of the cost of living, accommodation, airfare, visa application and the tuition fees in the US.
Globally, more than half a million international students choose to study in the United States and that makes it the number one destination for studying abroad.
The program offers five majors, namely, Finance, Management, Psychology, Communications and Marketing plus the option of pursuing double majors at no extra cost or duration of study.
“The entry requirement is 5 SPM credits or its equivalent. Students with Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) can also qualify to enter this program,” said Tiu. STPM and A-Level holders will gain credit transfer and may only be required to take 3 years to complete the program.
PTPTN loan is available and students can also opt for EPF withdrawals or the SEGi interest-free instalment payment scheme. The January intake is in progress.

KUCHING – Eleven students at SEGi College Sarawak were recognized for their academic excellence during the Principal’s Award 2011 Ceremony held in the main campus recently.
Amongst the recipients were Wee Wee Binti Buyong (Dip. In Nursing), Tracy Lim Li Mei (Dip. In Mass Communication), Maybelline Chew (Dip. in Tourism Management), Susana Chew Hui (Dip. in Tourism Management), Gradys Lee Sin Jung (Dip. in Tourism Management), Chai Poh Zhuang (Dip. in Accounting, Tan Chun Ping (Dip. in Accounting), Joanne Lo Fui Senn (Dip. in Early Childhood Education), Kuan Siaw Fung (Dip. in Early Childhood Education), Sally Sim Boon San (Dip. in Early Childhood Education) and Chew Ai Ping (Foundation in Commerce).
“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the recipients of the Principal’s Award, and to let them know that they have proven to the College and to themselves that they are among the Top 5 percent of students studying here,” said SEGi College Sarawak’s Principal, Mdm. Stella Lau.
“We believe that by taking the time to present performance awards to our students we can increase their motivation exponentially.”
The College acknowledged that learning is not always an easy process, but it is best done in a positive environment, and to account for that, awards and recognition are among the approaches used to create a good environment and inspire students to excel in their educational progress.
One might start as a first grade student that loves coming to school and learning new things, but by the time they reach college, the desire to learn might decreased greatly.
In order to keep students’ motivation going and help their desire to excel, the College has considered giving performance award to students, “this will give them reason to excel, and will also create a more positive environment in their classroom”.
This is proven by one of the recipient, Tan, a student from Diploma in Accounting who has receive the academic excellence award twice.
“This award definitely empowers me to do my best in my studies and it makes me feel appreciated when my efforts are recognized by the college,” said Tan.
“I would like to send my gratitude to all the lecturers that have helped me, it is their support that enables me to excel in my studies and receive this award twice.”
Commenting on the Principal’s award, Tan said that this award is not impossible to achieve,
“all it takes is just some discipline and a little hard work – any students can achieve it” he added.
SEGi College Sarawak understands that by appreciating the students, they will be much more likely to enjoy learning which can lead to increased productivity and learning effectiveness.
“Everyone likes to feel special once in a while, by giving the students recognition for a job well done, we hope that we can help build their confidence and belief in themselves,” Lau added.
The Principal’s Award is awarded to students from any academic programme offered in SEGi College Sarawak and is based solely on students’ academic achievement each semester.
Eligible recipients must obtain GPA’s of 4.0 or 2-4 distinctions depends on the length of semester where the results origin.

Expect excitement as a nurse

KUCHING – Nurses are responsible for providing care and assistance to patients during their treatment and recovery, and are also responsible for promoting good health.
A registered nurse who has passed their registered nursing exam have a high level of responsibility when it comes to their job duties whereby they need to be able to deal with people from all walks of life and all ages, and on top of that, they must be personable and flexible.
“The typical duties of a registered nurse could be something like this – taking patient temperatures, delivering injections, applying bandages, assisting doctors with various procedures, collecting data and so much more,” said SEGi College Sarawak Programme Coordinator of Nursing, Dayang Jakiah Binti Awang Yahya.
She also added that there are many different types of nurses, including those that work solely in the mental health field and those that work in paediatrics, which are just two of the numerous examples of nursing fields where specialized training is needed.
“The most important thing a nurse needs is a quick mind, a friendly smile and the ability to work under pressure.”
With the high demand from across different workforce sectors, nurses can also work at factories, offices, schools, daycare centres, in the military, on cruise ships and many other places where there is a need for medical care.
As the world population continues to increase, so does the demand and number of jobs for skilled nurses.
SEGi College Sarawak, in recognising this shortage, has been offering its government-approved Diploma in Nursing programme since 2008.
Students who pass the final examinations, including the Malaysian Nursing Board examinations, will graduate and be eligible to register with the Malaysian Nursing Board.
“This programme is designed to prepare students to be qualified as a Registered Nurse where it focuses both on the ‘care’ aspects of nursing as well as the ‘science’ of healthcare”.
Students will undergo a complete learning experience involving classroom work and hands-on training in simulation wards, practical room and skills laboratories, as well as earn real life experience during attachments with partner hospitals and community health clinics.

Danny Cheng Kai Hao and Lim Lee Ting were the two lucky students who received the device from the Principal, Mdm. Stella Lau in a small ceremony held in the main campus recently.
“The iPad 2 appears to be the perfect device for information at your fingertips that signifies the change that the student made to upgrade themselves to higher level of education” said Lau.
Offering convenience and portability, the iPad 2 enhances student’s educational experience because it permits them to download digital textbooks, access course materials, conduct research, build presentations and groups project, take class notes and exams, and communicate freely with lecturers and peers in real time.
Cheng stated that the iPad 2 is a perfect giveaway for him as he is always on the go as its operating system is very light and fast with e-reader functionality.
“So there is no need to lug around a laptop and a pile of books” said Cheng.

KUCHING – It was a night to remember for Michelle Ting, the Diploma in Hotel Management student, who clad in silvery-grey dress clinched the title Prom Queen during SEGi College Sarawak Prom Night 2011 which was held recently.
“I was overwhelmed when my name was announced as the winner” said Ting adding that this is her first time entering such competition and recognizing that this will be one of the sweetest moments in her college life.
The Prom King Award went to a Korean student, Baek Seung Yup who said that he did not expected to win the award and in the same time proud because it is his first year in the College.

The head of organizing committee, Brendan Chin, who is also the President of the Student Council and an American Degree Program student said that Prom Night is the most awaited event in the student’s calendar every year, and it is expected that the committee must outdo the previous year events.
“We have different themes every year and this year, the theme is East Meets West and also exciting lucky draw prizes to look forward to” added Chin.
“To make this night a success, we have work together and I would like to congratulate my team for all the efforts and time spent” said Chin adding that although the process was not exactly smooth sailing, the team had managed to get through thick and thin together
The event was held at The Regency Rajah Court, kicked off with a welcoming dance “Ngajat” that immediately set the crowd in the authentic eastern mood as the dancers were fully clad in glittering traditional Iban costumes.
The audience was also entertained by other performances such as singing and modern dance which were in lieu with the dinner’s theme, East Meets West, and also there were more than 20 lucky draw prizes to be won.
The Prom Night event is one of the main annual events where students and staff get together to have fun and to know each other better.
“Through this event, we were able to discover our talents and strengths in event management and also develop our marketing skills and learn how to manage budget and time efficiently” he added.
The theme East Meets West was chosen as it depicts the multinational environment of SEGi College Sarawak.
Excellent 5 Star Rating
SEGi College Sarawak receives excellent 5-star rating from MOHE
KUCHING – An excellent 5 Star rating recently received by SEGi College Sarawak in MOHE MyQuest Evaluation is a testimonial for its commitment in delivering quality education by meeting the high standards as set out by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (MOHE).
Of 210 private colleges that participated in the MyQuest assessment, 23 colleges shone above the rest, with 3 receiving a 6 star rating and 20 receiving a 5 star rating. Segi College Sarawak was one of the colleges that was awarded 5 stars.
“I am immensely proud of the Group’s performance and the ranking of its colleges” said SEGi University College Vice Chancellor, Emeritus Professor Dr. Muhamad Awang.
The Malaysian Quality Evaluation System for Private Colleges (MyQuest) was launched by the Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khalid Nordin in January as an instrument to evaluate the current performance of private collages in Malaysia in terms of students, programmes, graduates, resources and governance - with the aim of encouraging private colleges to elevate their education standards.
“We are very honoured to be rated 5 stars and recognized as the top 23 colleges in Malaysia” said SEGi College Sarawak Principal, Mdm. Stella Lau.
“This recognition attests to the hard work and commitment of our staff and their focus in delivering quality services and workmanship”.

As much as 400 active private colleges in Malaysia were invited to take part in the evaluation process and a total of 232 colleges were eligible to be audited. Of these 232 colleges, 210 ended up participating in the evaluation.
Apart from SEGi College Sarawak, SEGi College Subang Jaya, SEGi College Kuala Lumpur and SEGi College Penang were all audited and also attained excellent ratings.
In the cluster-based categories, SEGi scored 6-star ratings for 5 of the 9 categories, the most of any education group.
“To achieve this, we have been working extra hard to make sure that the college meets the requirements outlined by the ministry,” Mdm. Lau added.
“This recognition will be the driving force for us to continuously improve our quality and performance to remain competitive in the market.”
Among others, this ranking will serve as reference point for National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loan approvals and requests to be upgraded to university-college status.
In the overall college-based category, only 3 colleges were awarded the maximum six star rating, 20 colleges attained five stars, 60 colleges attained four stars and the remaining received three stars and below.

BECAUSE BIRDS ARE IMPORTANT: Hear it from the experts!
It’s going to be a big weekend for birds when the 4th Sarawak Bird Race kicks-off on 29th October 2011 at the Permai Rainforest Resort, and then ‘migrates’ to the Borneo Highlands Resort on 30th October 2011.
It’s also promises to be a big weekend for bird and nature lovers alike.
John Arifin will run a workshop on using photography to capture wildlife and bird pictures. John is a Singapore-based nature and wildlife photographer and educator who travels across Asia to document wildlife, and the culture of Asia in search of a perfect moment to freeze in time. John had been to various parts of Sarawak & Sabah to explore the nature and birdlife of Borneo . One of the highlights of his trip to Sarawak was to photograph the extremely rare Dulit Frogmouth.
John believes that bird races have tremendous value. “They create awareness about birds and nature, they create fellowship between the keen and new birders, and they build friendships among bird lovers internationally,” he says, adding excitedly, “It’s great for tourism promotion!”
As a young lad, Nils Müller was enthralled by the eerie but fascinating Raptors while travelling through the Pyrenees , and his love for ornithology was sealed forever. A Biology graduate from Lund University in Germany, Nils specializes in Bird migration and Genetics, and will share his knowledge and experience about bird migration: why, when and how far they migrate, and how they orientate themselves along their migration route.
Nils believes that bird Races are a great way to draw attention to the diversity of birds that surrounds us. “Birds have the largest range of species on Earth and many of them are found in our own backyard! I like to think that learning about birds means learning to appreciate nature and its value to the society,” he says. Nils believes that having a majestic bird like the Hornbill on the Sarawak Flag shows the inspirational power birds can give. With their capability to fly and cover great distances, birds can serve as a great indicator of the state of nature for example, the effects of global warming and human impacts to the fragile environment. “As we struggle to save endangered birds, we may find that they could possibly provide solutions to save humankind from ourselves,” he concludes.
Other speakers who will be on hand to share their knowledge and experiences include:
a) Dr Pilai Poonswad from Mahidol University in Thailand who will speak about Hornbill conservation and especially about her work on building artificial nesting boxes for these majestic denizens of the tropical rainforest.
b) Dr. Charles Leh, Curator of Natural History & Zoology at the Sarawak Museum
c) Dr. Lim Chan Koon, an edible nest trader and producer who will speak about ‘Edible Nest Trading”.
