KUCHING: A total of 32 final year students of the Bachelor of (Hons) Business and Management (BABM) under the University of Sunderland, United Kingdom programme showed their true capabilities as student and researcher when they participated in the Dissertation Poster Presentation Competition held at SEGi College Sarawak on 16th and 17th December 2012.

The Dissertation of a research project is one of the most important assignments for students who are completing their Bachelor’s Degree and it helps students to develop strong analytical skills and the ability to conduct research independently.

“Students learn to master the skills of conducting research by doing a dissertation project.  They develop the ability to undertake investigation, identify resources, review literature, applying appropriate research methodology and produce professional reports when undertaking this project,” said Miss Diana Atton, Program Coordinator of Faculty of Business and Accountancy.

The Best Dissertation Poster Presentation 2012 award went to Ms Felicia Ngu Siaw Ting with her research entitled “Sales Promotion on Halal Product.  A case study on Non-Food Product among Muslims and Non-Muslims.”

The award was given by the Module Leader, Alan Charlesworth from University of Sunderland, United Kingdom during his visit to SEGi College Sarawak Centre on 17th December 2012.

According to Mr. Charlesworth, “Felicia’s dissertation was selected as the best due to the uniqueness of the topic, contribution of the research findings to marketing field and the community/society (locally and internationally); and it has the potential to be published in an international journal.”

This paper was also presented in a local conference in Kuching, October 2012 and received positive reviews as well.

The Dissertation Poster Proposal category was won by Rock Stevie Jee Boon Leong followed by Bing Woan Ting as the 1st Runner Up and 2nd Runner Up by Lee Shau Yee.

SEGians Object Animal Abuse

8 December 2012, KUCHING: SEGians celebrated a “Care For Animal” Day when they visited the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (SSPCA).  SEGi College Sarawak Tourism Club (SCSTC) showed their support by organizing a charity event at Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (SSPCA). They visited the Centre to care for the dogs and cats and helped the staff to clean the animal shelters.

SEGians are against animal cruelty and believe that animals should be treated with love and respect.

“Through the speech given by the General Manager, I came to realize that many people are irresponsible and lack love for animals. They would leave their pets there when they go on vacation.  Some pets were brought into the animal shelter by the pet owner’s neighbour as the pets were not well taken care of. It is nice to know that there are kind volunteers that still visit and help at the centre every week.  I admire these good Samaritans and hope to do the same,” said Maybelline Chew, student from Diploma in Tourism Management, Faculty of Hospitality (FOH).

“Being a volunteer will help the students increase their awareness of their surroundings and understand the needs of those around them.  Unlike people, animals cannot speak for themselves and count on others to love and care for them. As Hospitality and Tourism students, this activity helps our students to care for others and learn to give good service to different groups of the society,” said Madam Elina Tiu, Principal of SEGi College Sarawak.

The Faculty of Hospitality (FOH) offers programmes such as the Bachelor of Science (Hons) International Tourism and Hospitality, Diploma in Hotel Management and Diploma in Tourism Management, as well as some new programs such as the diplomas in Culinary Arts and Baking & Pastry Art.

The programmes offered under the FOH are recognised by Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA).
