KUCHINGSEGi University College, Malaysia’s largest private institution in term of student numbers and market capitalisation, is set to grow even bigger with the setting up of a modern campus in Perak.

The new SEGi Enclave near Ipoh, will be developed on a 60-acre plot of land, comprising of academic blocks, apartments, laboratories, link houses and recreational activities. The whole development, to be completed in about two years, will have a gross development value of about RM600mil.

SEGi’s group managing director, Datuk Seri Clement Hii said that the group worked on an “asset-light concept” whereby most of the buildings would be built and sold to buyers and leased back for use on a long-term basis.

“This will ensure investors of a guaranteed income up to 10 to 15 years, while SEGi will not need to tie up its capital on infrastructure costs,” he explained.

Hii said he didn’t believe in spending endlessly on capital expenditure. “In the end, I don’t want our profits to be in the form of buildings and facilities.”

Hii noted that SEGi might create more “education hubs” in other parts of Malaysia.

The Ipoh ground breaking ceremony was graced by the Perak Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir earlier this week. Many state and SEGi officials were present.

The Menteri Besar said the new campus would contribute towards the development of critical human capital and make the attainment of internationally recognised twinning programmes within the reach of a greater population.

He pointed out, “The campus is poised to serve not only students from Perak but is set to complement the State’s drive to become the new vibrant and exciting metropolis of Malaysia. We want to stamp Perak as a world class education destination which will attract students from across the region. We even hope to see various exchange programmes to facilitate students from campuses outside of Perak and across the world to be exposed to and experience the unique tradition and culture of the State.”

SEGi’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Muhammad Awang said, “SEGi University College has more than 34 years of background and experience in the education sector, and is dedicated to offering industry relevant programmes aimed at equipping graduates with key expertise needed to meet industry demands. We are passionate about providing a complete educational experience to all our students.”

In partnership with a number of international universities, SEGi plans to offer a variety of programmes at the new Perak campus, from foundation and diploma level programmes to bachelor and masters degrees in the areas of healthcare, allied health sciences, business, engineering, creative arts and hospitality & tourism.

SEGi will play the role of a local partner to these international universities, providing students with the opportunity to obtain UK, USA or Australian degrees locally at a substantial cost saving.
