Study the American way
KUCHING
– SEGi College Sarawak invites everyone to
come to the college on the 30th of March 2012 (10am-12pm), as the
college will hold an Exclusive Session with the Malaysia Program Director of
Upper Iowa University, Mr. Kalai Poniah who will talk on the advantages of the
American Degree Program.
“Parents and students should take on
this opportunity to know in depth on what the program can offer and what are
the prospects for the graduates of this very program” said the Principal of
SEGi College Sarawak, Madam Elina Tiu.
The American Degree Programme (ADP) at
SEGi is gaining momentum in popularity among Malaysian students due to its
unique liberal teaching methods.
The American-styled education system
focuses on assessing students throughout each semester through pop-quizzes,
presentations, assignments and class participation rather than just on the
final examinations alone.
This creates well-rounded graduates who
tend to be more vocal, creative and confident than students who study under the
conventional education system.
“The syllabus for this programme is
structured to train and encourage students to be independent and creative,” added
Tiu.
“There is a distinct difference between
the ADP students and those who are undergoing their degree programmes from UK
and Australia.”
“Those under the American education
system stand out. They make themselves noticed and they are not fearful of
taking on responsibilities. They are more extroverted in nature. Even the ones
who were shy and quiet to begin with, now have full confidence of themselves.”
The four-year Bachelor of Science degree
programme will expose students to some of the most up-to-date developments in
the world because United States is the leader in several areas of research and
technology.
The degree is awarded by Upper Iowa
University (UIU) and students can complete their American degree in Kuching at
a fraction of the cost of studying in USA.
However, if the students have the
budget, the program gives students the flexibility of interchanging between
SEGi and UIU’s Fayette Campus in the United States.
Since 1857, Upper Iowa University has
been preparing students to succeed—in the classroom and in the world. That rich
history, coupled with a student-centered mission, has created a springboard for
UIU to become a recognized innovator in offering accredited, quality programs
through flexible and multiple delivery systems in an environment in which
diversity is respected, encouraged, and nurtured.
This means that they can choose to study
a term, a semester, a year or even complete their entire degree at the American
campus if they so choose as the university allows for flexible credit transfer.
Naturally the cost will escalate as
students need to take into consideration of the cost of living in USA, the
accommodation, airfare, visa application and the tuition fees.
Globally, more than half a million
international students choose to study in the United States and that makes it
the number one destination for studying abroad.
The program offers five majors, namely,
Finance, Management, Psychology, Communications and Marketing plus the option
of pursuing double majors at no extra cost or duration of study.
“The entry requirement is 5 SPM credits
or its equivalent. Students with Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) can also qualify to enter this
program,” said Tiu. STPM and A-Level holders will gain credit transfer and may
only be required to take 3 years to complete the program.
Mahasiswa agen penyedar, penyebar program transformasi negara
GOLONGAN
transformasi negara khususnya melalui pendekatan Program Transformasi Kerajaan
(GTP) dan Program Transformasi Ekonomi (ETP), kata Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled
Nordin.
Menurut
tinggi awam (IPTA),” saran Mohamed Khaled.
Peranan
tahun 2020.
Mohamed
Khaled berkata, program-program berbentuk keusahawanan sosial (social
nilai-nilai seperti kreativiti, berkolaborasi, memahami keutamaan, berfi kir
Seterusnya,
Mohamed Khaled optimis, kejayaan transformasi
malah turut sama membawa penyelesaian
dan cadangan penambahbaikan kepada permasalahan tersebut.

Amalan membaca majukan industri buku negara

No substitute to real life experience
SEGi College Sarawak offer international internship
KUCHING
– International internships are one of the most
effective ways of giving students the experience of a different working
culture, said the Principal of SEGi College Sarawak, Madam Elina Tiu in her
speech during the English Intensive Programme Graduation Ceremony that took
place in the main campus at Jalan Bukit Mata recently.
11 Students from Daeduk University and
Tongwon University of South Korea graduated last week after completing their
English Intensive Programme in SEGi College Sarawak.
The partnership programme with two of
the prominent universities in South
Korea enabled their students to experience everything Malaysia has to offer as
well as attending their English language course, specifically catered to them
as part of the their internship programmes in their respective university.
Through this programme, the students
will not just participate in an English language enhancement programme for a
number of weeks but they will also send to either 4 or 5-star hotel to commence
on their internship.
“We believe that the international internship
programmes will sharpen the skills that you learned in class”
“The whole experienced will teach you to
use the foreign language that was taught and to apply it in this kind of
internship requirement will really test how much you learned – if you just
learned the language in a mediocre way then you will have a hard time during
your internship and a lot of catching up will need to be done” said Tiu.
She also added that through internship,
the students explore a variety career options, sharpen their skills in
cross-cultural communication and negotiations, and deepen their understanding
of the challenges of the global economy.
She explained that the programme is
designed for students who wish to improve their English language skills and
gain more work experience in Malaysia. These international students would have
the opportunity to utilise the language in an everyday work environment.
The certificates were issued by the
respective hotels to the Korean students upon completion of the programme.
“It is very
exciting to be able to offer this meaningful learning opportunity to them”
added Tiu.
“It is more
than a language study abroad programme. Through an internship, the Korean
student can give something back to the (host) country, instead of simply
absorbing its language and culture – the experience is more significant when
both sides contribute”.
With 35 years of experience in providing
industry driven diplomas and degrees, SEGi College has made itself one of the
most prominent colleges in Malaysia.
The college provide its students with a
broad-based knowledge and employment skills for dealing with demanding jobs in

The cornerstone for success
KUCHING – Reading is considered as a cornerstone for
success, not just in schools but also throughout the life of an individual,
said the Principal of SEGi College Sarawak, Madam Elina Tiu during the
1Malaysia Book Voucher Giveaway in the main campus recently.
With the
growing amount of digital information available, people particularly young
adult are spending more time reading electronic materials and a growing amount
of reading time are spent more on skimming and browsing for information on the
internet that deviates from the traditional reading method – which are brief,
linear and less structured.
The advent
of the electronic media is challenging the habit in the society by shifting the
attention to computer and television viewing.
“We don’t
want our student to perceive reading as a waste of time and they only read for
purpose of passing examinations”
The College is
aware of the myriad of benefits that can be acquired through consistent reading
of high-quality reading material and the positive progressive result that it
can induce for the country in terms of intellectual, social, spiritual and
personal development.
“In our
information-saturated globe, knowledge is constantly being updated and
upgraded, wherein previous information would deem obsolete or impractical”
added Tiu who then stresses that it is imperative for students to make reading
as a pleasurable and continuing habit if they want to keep abreast with the
world and have the competitive edge.
“Student
should realize that they will have to read continuously even after finishing
their formal education”
The College
also believe that if the students do not hone this habit, they will not have
the initiative to constantly read not only to improve their career standing but
also for personal developments in order to become a better and useful citizen.
Tiu also
encouraged the students to buy books that are on display in conjunction with
the SEGi College Sarawak Book Fair 2012 at the college on the same day.
Two
bookstores namely Smart Bookstore and Popular Bookstore were invited to set up
exhibition at the fair for the convenience of the students.
“As a higher
learning service provider, we appreciate the government’s initiative to ease
the students’ book expanses and we seriously hope that the students will spend
the voucher wisely”
Commenting
on the report on the misuse of the book voucher among varsity students, Tiu warned
the students that it must only be used to buy books for their own good and to
lighten their financial burden in buying books.
Tabulated
into the 2012 Budget last year, it was announced by the Prime Minister Datuk
Seri Najib Tun Razak that the government would give RM200 book voucher to all
Malaysian students at the public and private higher learning institutions, and
those doing matriculation or in Form Six, and the voucher could not be
exchanged for cash.
