Psychology: The science of mind and behaviour

KUCHING: Psychology is the field relating to mental and behavioural sciences. However, many of us have the misconception that psychology and psychiatry are the same thing.

Psychology and psychiatry belong to two very different areas of study although there are in the same field. Psychiatry is the field devoted especially to the study and treatment of mental disorders, while psychology is the study of the mind and behaviour of a person.

Psychologists often use scientific methods such as careful observation, experimentation and analysis. These scientific methods are important for psychologists in order to look for a different approach based on solving various cases, depending on the needs of the people, organisation and society.

There are many companies in Malaysia that require workers who are knowledge in the field of Psychology for their skills and approaches, which are especially useful when conducting interviews, sales, marketing, business negotiations, education and more.

Therefore, SEGi College Sarawak has acknowledged this industry need and is committed to producing more professionals in this field through their Diploma in Psychology. Students who study this programme will enjoy vast career prospects in different fields such as business, education, health, communication, and others.

Madam Elina Tiu, Principal SEGi College Sarawak, explained that the syllabus in this diploma was developed in order to educate students on how to understand human emotions and behaviour through different cases. This practice helps students to develop their critical thinking and analytical skills in solving mind and behavioural cases.

"Students will have to complete various subjects offered in this Diploma, such as Introduction to Psychology, Lifespan Development, Personality, Principles of Counselling, Behaviour and Brain, Criminology and more, exposing them to different perspectives of human behaviour while also enhancing their knowledge and skills in various aspects of the field. Students will also be required to undertake industrial training in relevant institutions or organisations,” Tiu further elaborated.

The Diploma in Psychology has received recognition from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE). SEGi College Sarawak offers financial assistance in the form of study loans and scholarships to high achievers in SPM and STPM.

SEGi College Sarawak also offers programmes from Foundation and Diploma level to Bachelor and Master degrees in various fields such as culinary arts, hospitality, Islamic banking, finance, nursing, allied health science, accounting, education, creative arts, mass communication and law.

Financial Planning starts young

KUCHING: SEGi College Sarawak Accounting Club (SCSAC), a club under the Faculty of Business and Accountancy, organised a discussion session titled “Financial Planning Starts Young” which was held at the main campus on Friday 27th July 2012.

The aim of this session was to enhance the student’s industrial knowledge on this matter and, as such, SCSAC invited financial planning expert, Mr. Victor Liew, Sales Manager-Core Banking of United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Bhd to be the guest speaker for the event.

The discussion focused on the importance of saving in financial planning. According to Mr. Liew, Malaysians are generally unaware of the importance of having a sound retirement plan.

They need to be educated and disciplined toward their retirement saving and need to make saving a habit in their everyday life, starting at the young age in order to have financial security during their retirement.

“Mr. Victor Liew shared a lot of useful information for our future financial programme graduates to explore further during their studies”, said Madam Elina Tiu, Principal of SEGi College Sarawak.

“The students will benefit from the extra insights and knowledge gained into their field of study from an industry expert” added Tiu.

“SCSAC did a good job in organizing this event and provided a platform for the students to better understand financial planning”, added Tiu.

All programmes offered within the Faculty of Business and Accountancy are recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA).

SEGi College Sarawak also provides financial assistance in the form of study loans and scholarships for high achievers.
