SEGi Hotel, Tourism Graduates in Demand

SEGi College Sarawak’s graduates, particularly the Hotel Management and Tourism Management ones, are proving to be excellent employees in East Malaysia as well as in Peninsula Malaysia.

Feedback from various companies has given the College a very positive response on the working capabilities of its graduates.

One such graduate is Phin Jia Zhen who is working for Pullman Kuching.

Phin: A model employee

“I caught the attention of my employers when I was doing my internship with the 5-star hotel. I knew that if I worked hard I would have a good chance of securing a job here,” said the Diploma in Hotel Management holder.

“My internship with the Front Office Department was only for 3 months but I was actually offered a job just one month into my internship.”

Phin took up the offer after completing her internship and her final semester with SEGi College Sarawak. Her graduation, incidentally, was also held at the same hotel in October last year.

“I applied everything I had learnt into the work place and picked up some new skills and experience along the way. I’m following closely my desired career path and plan to work my way up the corporate structure,” she said.

Evidently, Pullman is recognising her skills and abilities as she has recently been promoted to Supervisor. She was also the Best Employee of the Month for December, 2010.

Pullman Reservation & Revenue Manager Mira Manirah Ahmad, Phin’s immediate superior, complimented that Phin is “a dedicated, disciplined, self-motivated and loyal person”.

''My target was to be promoted within the first year and I managed to achieve that first goal. I intend to remain focus and take every opportunity to improve myself further.”

Phin is one of the eight graduates who were gainfully employed before their graduation. Among those who secured jobs quickly include air steward Andy Voon, hoteliers Jolyn Wong, Tai Peng Jhuan, Khrisphine Kay, Mohd Sahlan and Jennifer Lee, and Joanna Fung - who is now working as a Assistant Program Executive cum Customer Service Officer in Singapore.

Most SEGi College Sarawak students are interned with the institution’s corporate partners and this is their opportunity to show to prospective employers that they are truly industry-driven graduates.

Many of the hotel and tourism graduates became employees of the corporations that they were interned to including the initial eight graduates in 2010. The remaining graduates, with the exception of those who decided to continue on to complete their degree, have nearly all secured jobs.

This success is not only evident in the Faculty of Hospitality but also in other faculties that offer business administration, marketing, human resource development, graphic design, interactive multimedia, computing and a host of other programmes.

The new semester for SEGi College Sarawak’s programmes commences on July 4th.

SEGi’s Business Management Graduates find High Employability

GOOD CHOICE… SEGi students can look forward to high employment.

KUCHING: If students are worried about securing a job after graduating from SEGi College Sarawak’s Diploma in Business Management (DBM), they can rest assure that the chances of getting a job is nearly 100%.

The statistics, provided by SEGi College’s Faculty of Business, showed that 97% out of 2009’s DBM graduates are fully employed. The number does not include those who have decided to further their studies.

This is a slight improvement from the already impressive employability record from the 2008 graduates. In 2008, 92% of the graduates who was looking for a job were employed within three months of their graduation.

“Some even found jobs before their Graduation Ceremony,” said Diana Atton, Programme Coordinator for the Faculty of Business – Diploma and Foundation Studies.

“This is why SEGi College Sarawak is the premier Business College in Kuching, if not Sarawak. Our students have always been very well sought after due to our industry driven syllabus.

“SEGi has over 30 years of experience in this field and we have the proven record that we are among the best in Malaysia.

“However, it is only fair to note that more students decided to further their studies by articulating into University of Sunderland, UK’s BA (Hons) in Business and Management in 2008.”

DBM graduate Vera Veronica was pleased with the knowledge that she gained from the programme as it provided a wide coverage of business related activities such as human resource management, office administration and accounts.

The knowledge she gained has served her well in her current capacity as Office Manager of an established retail outlet in Bintulu.

“I started off as an Administrative Assistant,” she said, noting that she got the job after applying for the post in one attempt. “This is my first job.”

Vera was promoted to her managerial post within in a space of one year.

Similarly, Shriver Peter and Chong Ee Lin, both found jobs as Accounts Assistants. Both said the curriculum was good and that the lecturers were able to provide real-life experience and scenarios which added value to the lessons.

The industry-driven syllabus was advantageous to both women as it created a better platform upon which to launch their careers.

Shriver works in the automotive industry while Chong work with a freight and forwarding company.

Although the programme is in business management, it covers many aspects of accountancy which is to both women’s advantage.

“It is a good programme. SEGi College’s facilities are good and the lecturers are helpful,” said Shriver.

Meanwhile, STPM students who applied to study in local universities but failed to gain a place can take advantage of SEGi College Sarawak’s latest promotion.

They can still vie for a bachelor degree from any one of the College’s partner universities with a RM5,000 rebate off the tuition fees.

The added advantage is that the students will now gain an overseas bachelor degree at a much lower cost than before. All they need to do when they register with SEGi College is to provide a copy of their rejection latter from the local university.”

Students can obtain further information about the courses during the SEGi roadshow in Sarikei, Sibu, Betong, Kapit, Saratok. Miri, Serian, Kota Samarahan, Bintulu and Kuching.

The Sarikei roadshow will be held at Dragon Inn on June 12 and 13 (10am to 4pm) and Tanahmas Hotel, Sibu on June 14 and 15 (10am to 4pm).

The other stops are Betong Plaza Hotel, Betong on June 15 (10am to 4pm), Meligai Hotel, Kapit on June 16 (10am to 2pm), Royal Garden Hotel, Saratok on June 16 (10am to 4pm), Imperial Hotel and Miri on June 17 and 18 (10am to 4pm).

The final locations for the June roadshow are Bilik Santapan, Dewan Masyarakat, Serian on June 17 (10am to 4pm), Ruang Legar, Bilik Masyarakat, Kota Samarahan on June 18 (10am to 4pm), ParkCity Everly Hotel, Bintulu on June 19 and 20 (10am to 4pm) and the Electra House, Kuching on June 19 and 20 (10am to 2pm).

UEC Students can Apply for PTPTN Loan at SEGi

GREEN LIGHT GIVEN…. Accounts Assistant Norafel Reducto holding up the letter from PTPTN that says that UEC students can apply for its loan.

KUCHING: Students from Chinese-medium schools can now use their Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) results when they pursue higher education at SEGi College Sarawak.

In addition, they can also apply for PTPTN loans, a new development on the government’s stance to encourage further education locally.

The entry requirements are 3 UEC credits for diploma programmes and 5 UEC credits for degree programmes.

“This is good news for students of Chinese-medium schools. In the past, getting a degree locally after their examinations was very limited as entry requirements to local institutions was based on the SPM and STPM results,” said Stella Lau Principal of SEGi College Sarawak.

“Many Chinese students had to sit for 2 examinations, namely UEC and SPM, as they needed the latter results for entry into local higher institutions.”

Allowing UEC students to get PTPTN loan through local colleges is another good development as it means that more youths would be able to upgrade their knowledge and skills.

Students can also take advantage of the SEGi’s on-going promotion for a financial free study period.

They can opt for the RM500 single sum payment and not have to pay anything until they have finished their entire course. The remaining amount will be covered by their PTPTN loan.

At SEGi College, students can choose from 30 diploma and degree programmes affiliated with many foreign universities in a wide variety of fields such as nursing, accountancy, business, computing, multimedia, hotel management, communications and law.

SEGi College Sarawak has collaborations with top-notch reputable and renowned universities such as the University of Sunderland (UK), University of Southern Queensland (Australia) and Upper Iowa University (USA).

One of the most popular 3+0 degree programmes offered is the BA (Hons) Business and Management offered in collaboration with the University of Sunderland, UK.

In collaboration with the University of Southern Queensland, SEGi has the Bachelor of Business majoring in Human Resource Management or Marketing.

If students prefer an American degree, there is the Bachelor of Science 4+0 from Upper Iowa University, USA. There are 5 majors - psychology, management, marketing, finance and communications.

SEGi also offers diploma programmes in law, accountancy, business management, marketing, computer studies, human resource management, hotel management, tourism management, graphic design, creative multimedia, mass communication, early childhood education, nursing, medical laboratory technology and environmental health.

All the programmes are recognised and approved by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and the Ministry of Higher Education.

SEGi Nurses can go Global

KUCHING: The global shortage of nurses is not getting any better. If at all, it is simply becoming more acute as the years progress.

What sounds like bad news is actually good news those entering this occupation – That there is a high opportunity to secure a job in this health-related industry.

“Statistics from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and nursing associations in many countries now point towards a global shortage of nurses,” said Stella Lau, Principal of SEGi College Sarawak.

“The gap between the actual number of registered nurses and the 1:200 ratio as recommended by WHO is increasing. With global exponential population growth, higher incidences of illness, longer lifespan and a growing aging population, there will be a sharp need for an increased number of registered nurses.”

In view of this, SEGi College Sarawak trains its nursing students to have the latest knowledge and skills relevant to the industry as well as sufficient exposure to practical experience so that they may enter the global market in future.

There is a whole host of positions open to those in the nursing field such as scrub nurse, clinical nurse leader, live-in nurse, industrial nurse, migration health nurse, nurse manager, clinical specialist, occupational health nurse manager, occupational therapist and nursing lecturer.

“What also makes nursing a great career path is the nature of the profession. It allows for specialisation in one or more areas of patient care,” said Lau.

For example, a Registered Nurse can be a specialist in both pediatric oncology as well as geriatrics. Registered Nurses can take up diplomas in any specialisation.
“All the skills gained from nursing can be useful in the long-term. Nurses often find themselves applying their health care expertise on themselves and on their own families.
“A nurse would know exactly what to do in cases of emergency at home and how to care for sick elderly parents.”
Nursing students at SEGi College Sarawak can look forward to even more options in clinical training placements since SEGi signed a new Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Ministry of Health early this year.

The MoA was signed between the Ministry of Health and SEGi College Subang Jaya, SEGi College Kuala Lumpur, SEGi College Penang and SEGi College Sarawak. This MoA will see each centre utilising more Ministry of Health facilities for clinical training purposes.

This collaboration is aimed at providing hands-on exposure to students in the clinical services within a broad area of health studies which would indirectly spur the health industry.

Via this integrated agreement, the Ministry of Health is able to provide resources as well as monitor the progress of the students placed at these facilities.
The programme is accredited by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Malaysian Nursing Board, and is also approved by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
SEGi’s campuses are well equipped with sufficient simulation wards and skills laboratories to give students the best learning experiences.
Students who require financial aid can rest assured that there are loans and allowances available for suitable candidates. SEGi also arranges for students’ accommodation, especially those who are from outstation.
Meanwhile, SEGi College Sarawak is making a final call for the July intake. Class starts next week.

Get qualified to work and travel

INDUSTRY DRIVEN… Those taking the Faculty of Hospitality programmes will undergo internships like SEGi student Vanessa Senaya ak Changgai.

KUCHING: The tourism industry is one of the most resilient industries irregardless of economic influences and there is evidence to prove this too.

Despite the global economic crises being at the worst in 2008, the tourist arrivals in Malaysia did not drop, on the contrary they have continued rising since 1998, as recorded by the Tourist Development Corporation of Malaysia.

In addition to this, it is expected that there will be an increase in expenditure by international tourists in Malaysia in 2011. The estimation is based on a market research report on ‘Opportunities in Malaysian Tourism Industry (2007-2009)’.

“This means that there are bright prospects for job opportunities in the tourism industry,” said Alan Tan, SEGi College Sarawak Vice Principal of Academic.

“In fact, there is already a shortage in manpower in Malaysia. This is not surprising as many skilled Malaysians in this industry are being snatched up by employers in other countries by offering them higher salaries and better employment packages.”

Students who decide to pursue a career in the tourism industry need not fear about finding work as this is one of the industries that has sustainable growth in both mainstream and niche markets such as medical tourism and cultural-tourism.

Diploma and degree holders in hotel management or tourism management can gain employment in a wide range of companies, be it in hotels, tourism companies, airline companies, economic development agencies, tourism development bodies as well as the food and beverage industry.

SEGi College Sarawak offers the Diploma in Tourism Management and Diploma in Hotel Management that fully equip students to excel in the industry. Graduates from SEGi will have a strong foundation for success in their careers.

Most of SEGi College Sarawak students were offered jobs by the industry players at the end of their internship even before they graduated. This is an added advantage to the internship programme as well as assuring students that the diplomas are truly industry driven and recognised by these companies.

In addition, the College has many university partners in UK and Australia where diploma holders can articulate into the degree equivalent.

SEGi has collaboration with the University of Sunderland, UK, Leeds Metropolitan University, UK and University of Southern Queensland, Australia

“Students at SEGi also enjoy opportunity for hands-on experience at leading hotels through its internship programme. This helps to further instil in its students good attitude, strong professional ethics, good people skills, a hard-working nature, humility, a good command of English and other skills and positive traits,” said Tan.
These skills will not only help them to launch their career but also provide a framework for life-long learning.
